Paolo Emilio Pinto: Open Issues in Seismic Design and Assessment of Bridges (T4)

BRIEF CV
Paolo Emilio Pinto was awarded the distinction of Laureate in Civil Engineering at the University of Rome in 1964. He has been professor in Civil Engineering at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” since 1974. Chair of Earthquake Engineering, Department of Structural and Geotechnical Engineering.
Professor Pinto has been involved in numerous international research projects, and is promoter of scientific exchanges with institutions in Europe, the USA and Japan.
The scientific areas of his interest involve seismic behaviour and design of structures,
non-linear behaviour and modelling of structures, reliability theory and methods of reliability analysis for systems and lifelines.
Paolo Pinto is author of over 200 papers in the areas of design and seismic risk assessment of: bridges, nuclear plants, electric networks, earth dams, historical buildings, road networks.
He is among the authors of the book “Seismic Reliability of Structures” (Pinto, P.E., Giannini, R., Franchin, P. IUSS Press, Pavia, 2004 (ISBN, 88-7358-017-3))
Paolo Pinto was chairman of the Eurocode 8: Design Provisions for Earthquake Resistance of Structures and member of the drafting groups for buildings and bridges, the C.E.B.Commission III: Design, and of the working group: Seismic Design. He is also chairman of the fib Commission 7: Seismic Design.
He is president of the Scientific Committee of EUCENTRE (Pavia, Italy), member of the CNR (National Research Council) Committee deliberating technical regulatory documents and member of the National Committee for the Prevention of Cultural Heritage against Seismic Risk, Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali.
In 2007 (November – December), Paolo Pinto was member of an International Panel set up by FCT of Portugal (Foundation for Science and Technology ) for the evaluation of the scientific activity of 14 Research Units belonging to the Universities of Lisbon, Coimbra, Porto, Covilha and Braga.
