Carlos Sousa Oliveira: Historical Constructions: Reflections on Assessing Seismic Vulnerability and Retrofit (T3)

BRIEF CV

After completing his Engineer degree at the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon (IST, Technical University of Lisbon) in 1969, Carlos Oliveira started working on earthquake engineering at the Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil (LNEC, Lisbon, Portugal), as a graduate student. In 1971 he started his post-graduate programme at the University of California, Berkeley where he completed his M.Sc. and Ph.D., respectively, in 1972 and 1975. He joined the LNEC staff in 1973.

He completed two academic internal degrees at LNEC, one in 1979 for Specialist and the other in 1987 for Research Officer.

He has completed several post-graduate studies in the USA, at Berkeley in 1977, 1985 and at Stanford in 1980. He has kept close research contacts at almost permanent basis.

He joined Instituto Superior Técnico, Technical University of Lisbon, Department of Civil Engineering, as Full Professor of Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering in 1993. His main field of interest is earthquake engineering with emphasis on engineering seismology and seismic hazard and risk mitigations. He has made scientific and technical contributions in several of these fields, such as strong motion, dynamic behaviour of existing structures and losses estimation, and dedicated part of his work to minimization of earthquake risk in the Continental Portugal and the Azores.

He is author of several publications and has participated in various international conferences and seminars where he presented papers and keynote lectures. He has written a number of papers in international journals and is co-editor of two books and Guest Editor of two Special Issues of the Bulletin of European Earthquake Engineering journal (BEEE).

He has been an active consultant with many institutions in Portugal, in the field of seismology, structural engineering and civil protection, and has participated in several European Community programmes and projects.
He has been member of the Portuguese Academy of Engineering and Academy of Sciences since 2004.
He is the President of the Portuguese Society for Earthquake Engineering, and he chaired the Portuguese committee for preparing the National Document Application of EC8 up to 2003. He was the Convener of the Project Team no.1 for revision of Eurocode-8 and was President of the Board of ICIST, the Research Unit in the Civil Engineering Department of IST dedicated to Structural Mechanics and Construction in the period 2001-2002.

He served as Chairman of the Civil Engineering and Architecture Department of IST in the period 2005-2006.
He has been member of the Executive Committee of the European Association for Earthquake Engineering and he is the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 15th World Conference for Earthquake Engineering to take place in Lisbon, Portugal in September 2012.
